Life happens whether we want it to or not. You have two choices when unexpected situations arise in your life. You can either fight, deny, or try to ignore it OR you can start to accept it and truly understand you cannot control everything that happens in your life.
If you choose to fight it and control every little detail of your life, you will find yourself in a constant state of mystery, anger, and frustration. I lived that way for many years, trying to control my life and all aspects of it. Every time I thought I planned for everything, life showed up and let me know that I was not in control.
This realization didn’t truly sink in until years later after suffering many self-sabotaging and self-inflicted wounds to my emotional and mental state. Like many things in life, I had to surrender. I had to surrender to the fact that I was not in control of most of the things that happened in my life. What I was in control of was how I reacted these unplanned situations. Once I actually lived by this motto of accepting life on life’s terms, I experienced freedoms that I never felt before. I was no longer consumed by a perpetual feeling of controlling each and every aspect of my life.
You just have to remember that life comes with the ups filled with happiness and joy, as well as the downs filled with sadness and grief. Nothing lasts forever, so don’t get too caught up in the moment, whether good or bad. Always remind yourself that it’s not always what happens that defines us, but how we react and move forward; accepting it and living life on life’s terms.
